Shenae has recently completed her Advanced Diploma of Myotherapy. Shenae has now added cupping and myofascial dry needling to her skills.

Myotherapy is the assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions, which may cause muscular dysfunction and the pain thus affecting movement & mobility. Myotherapists utilize a range of treatment techniques to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia). They also employ various soft tissue manipulation techniques, together with other modalities such as: trigger point therapy, dry needling, deep tissue massage, hot and cold therapies, passive/active muscle stretching and corrective or rehabilitative exercises. A Myotherapist aims to identify the cause of one’s pain to ensure quick, effective and long lasting results.

Cupping massage therapy can be traced back to Traditional Chinese Medicine and was initially used to bring blood flow, reduce stagnation in the blood and relieve pain. I use a modern technique called Myofascial Cupping or Gliding Cupping. The cups stay on the body with a small amount of vacuum suction and are moved around the body in a gliding movement using oil. This technique also reduces the marking seen in stagnant cupping. Cupping can be used to treat pain associated with a range of musculoskeletal conditions and can be used to:

Relax the body and affected muscles
Improve blood flow
Stimulate the lymphatic system
Reduce local pain
Improve flexibility

Dry needling is the process of using acupuncture needles to treat myofascial pain and musculoskeletal conditions. This is a form of intramuscular stimulation and when used has been shown to reduce pain and improve function and range of movement. The needles used are very thin and are rarely felt in most applications. In areas of heightened sensitivity a twitch or cramping sensation may be felt, however this is a short lasting sensation and is followed by relaxation of the muscle. Dry needling can help with:

Improving sleep and relaxation
Pain reduction
Improving range of movement
